@DIADetroit Young walk on 26.22 to refer to committee set a public committee hearing- on setting ordinances for public gatherings due to the mass shooting this month at a block party in the city. …a little back and forth between member Young & Pres Sheffield on interrupting & processes.
@DIADetroit Per police representative they are hoping the change in ordinance is for those holding & promoting the events.
@DIADetroit Discussion of this walk on- Sheffield had concerns about police using this for political or social justice rallies. Tate has concerns of over legislating, & whom will be charged with the ordinance.
@DIADetroit Member Santiago-Romero Has concerns as these parties are already illegal & doesn’t want to over police.
@DIADetroit Member Young advised it was his intent this was to go to a public hearing to be set during meeting to committee. They are requesting public hearing 7/29
@DIADetroit Concerns from Pres Sheffield and member Benson regarding the need for this to be pushed thru - The clerk office advised due To the need to publish public hearing 5 days before meeting. Benson says could be done on 30th. Need discussion in committee.
@DIADetroit Member Young brings up the mass shooting where 21 were shot this month & that “they are killing our babies”. Ordinance would add 2 additional policies.
@DIADetroit Member Benson points out going against the process would save 1 day. And the need for process. And wants to make it very clear he is against these illegal block parties and is for the process of going to committee at the cost of 1 day.
@DIADetroit All other Referrals to committees will be referred to the standing committees. No consent agenda… Member reports suspended.
